WordPress Plugin: PHP Exec

Have you ever wanted to execute PHP codes inside a post? If yes, you need to install PHP Exec which is a plugin for WordPress that lets you execute dynamic PHP code in posts.

It masks PHP code before balanceTags, and unmask them afterwards, so it should be safe to use PHP code that has literal HTML tags in it, for example: code which print out HTML.

Installation is pretty simple. Download the plugin, put it into your wp-content/plugins directory and activate it. And when you need to execute PHP codes, enclose the code with <phpcode> … </phpcode>

WordPress Plugin: Readers Post

Readers Post is a plugin for WordPress that can list out the recent posts read by your blog visitors. It can also show the number of visits a post has had and the most viewed posts of your blog.

The plugin “Readers_Post” shows for each post how often it was visited. So it works as a posts-based counter. You can generate something like “This post was read by 40 people until now” under each post of your WordPress blog.Secondly you can display the most recent posts that were read by other visitors and the most visited posts of all time. The visits is counted in a seperate table, so an update of WordPress causes no trouble. The visits of the SiteAdmin will not be counted

To install, just upload the plugin to your wp-content/plugins/ directory and activate the plugin. Then use the code the author has given.

How To Prevent Comment Spam

You might have noticed that you get most of your comment spam on older posts, this is because spammers target older posts as they are indexed by search engines. So it might be a good idea to automatically disable comments on older posts (posts that are 21 or more days old). This tip will be useful to you currently as Akismet is down.

For WordPress users, there is a plugin called Auto-Close Comments that will automatically disable comments after 21 days.

I just installed the plugin and I haven’t got any spam ever since even though Akismet is down :)

To install the plugin, go here and simply copy the plugin code provided there and paste it to your favorite text editor and save the file as autoshutoff.php. Now upload the file to your plugins folder and activate the plugin.

Google Sitemaps Generator WordPress Plugin Updated

The Google Sitemaps Generator Plugin for WordPress that automatically generates a sitemap and helps in better indexing of all pages of your blog has been updated.

Recently Yahoo, Google and Microsoft joined hands to support a single format for Sitemaps. A Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site. Sitemap 0.90 is now offered under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons License and Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft will continue to collaborate on the protocol and publish enhancements on the jointly-maintained site at sitemaps.org.

Recently the author of the plugin updated the xml-namespace definitions in the new beta version of the XML-Sitemap Generator for WordPress Plugin as per the new sitemaps.org standard.

I’ve updated the xml-namespace definitions in the new beta version of my XML-Sitemap Generator for WordPress Plugin to the new sitemaps.org standard.

Some of the updates in the latest beta version are:

  • Fixed some smaller bugs
  • Decreased memory usage which should solve timeout and memory problems
  • Updated namespace to support YAHOO and MSN

Also, if you are using UTW (Ultimate Tag Warrior) check this addon to include your tag pages in the sitemap.

Poll Results: Preference for Sidebars on a 3 Column Theme

Last week I had started a Poll on Preference for Sidebars on a 3 Column Theme. Thanks to all the 93 people who voted.

The option with the most votes (48) was together. 45 people voted for ‘on both sides’. This just means that there are an almost equal number of people who like having sidebars together and on both sides on a 3 Column Theme.

2 Column Theme with 3 Column Footer

These days I find an increasing number of bloggers using 2 column themes with 3 or 4 column footer. They have used the footer to place links for Categories, Recent Entries, Del.ico.us, Flickr, Blogroll, etc.

Seriously I feel placing links on the footer is big mistake as your readers may not notice them. How many readers do you think will scroll all the way down to notice them? Not all of them…that is why I have placed my links on the header.

How to integrate StumbleUpon to your WordPress blog

According to Wikipedia, StumbleUpon is a web discovery service which integrates peer-to-peer and social networking principles with one-click blogging. The Toolbar system automates the collection, distribution and review of web content within an intuitive social framework, providing users with a browsing experience which resembles “channel-surfing” the web.

Those of you who has used StumbleUpon (SU) before might have experienced the traffic they can send you if your site get’s stumbled. Also traffic from SU lasts more and can be higher than the traffic send from Digg. So why not encourage your visitors to Stumble your blog posts?
