Make Money Online With Kontera
Kontera’s ContentLink is a double underlined contextually relevant keyword on a web page that upon mouse-over opens a small bubble like box that displays and links to an ad from one of Kontera’s advertisers.
When a visitor clicks the in text advertisement, they will be taken to the advertiser’s web site and the publisher will make money online. With ContentLink, advertisers reach their targeted audience on a Cost Per Click (CPC) basis.

Why should I use Kontera?
Kontera’s ContentLink can be a nice source of additional revenue along with Adsense and other advertising programs you use, without taking any extra space on your web page. ContentLink is now my second biggest earner after AdSense and it has not affected my AdSense CTR so far. So if you wish to make money online with your web site, try out Kontera.
Can I use Kontera’s Contentlink and AdSense together?
Yes. AdSense now allows other contextual ads on the same page as long as they do not look the same as AdSense ads, so you don’t have to worry about violating AdSense TOS.
How can I earn more with Kontera?
Kontera works best with web sites that have a lot of textual content and traffic (that is why they have a requirement of 500,000 pageviews per month). The more pages your visitors view, the higher chance of them to view and click an ad.
Just like in AdSense, to earn more from Kontera you will need to increase your site traffic.
Qualifications needed to be accepted as a publisher
Inorder for your site to get accepted by Kontera, your site must
- generate more than 500,000 page impressions per month
- be content-rich with more than 50 words per page on the majority of the site
- use English as the primary language
Even though ContentLink requires your site to have 500,000 page impressions per month to get accepted, I have seen sites with low traffic get accepted. Even this site got accepted without having 500,000 page impressions per month.
What to do after getting accepted by Kontera?
The first thing to do after getting accepted by Kontera is to insert their code on all pages of your site (right before the closing </body> HTML tag) so that their servers can scan your content and serve the best matching ads. If you are using a WordPress blog, you will have to put the code in your theme’s footer.php.
During the first two weeks Kontera will conduct an optimization process on your site, so you may not earn so well during this period.
How do I increase my Kontera CTR?
To increase your CTR (Click Through Rate), you may want to change your Kontera’s link color to match your site’s link color.
You can change the link color in your Kontera’s ad codes. The line which controls link color is
var dc_AdLinkColor="#2277dd";
Change the above hex code to match your site’s link color.
How do I limit Kontera ContentLink ads to the main content?
When you first place Kontera’s ad code on your site, you will find ads placed all over your web page (sometimes even on your blog’s sidebar and headers). To control the placement of ContentLink ads on your web page you will need to use DIV tags.
When you apply them on your pages, ContentLink ads will appear only on the text that is between these tags.
Use the DIV tags in the following way
<div class=KonaBody>Text you want the ContentLink ads to appear on</div>
You can use the DIV tags as many times as you would like on a single page.
How to restrict ContentLink ads on certain areas of a page?
If you would like to restrict ContentLink ads on certain areas, use the following Span filter tags
<span name=KonaFilter>Text you don't want ContentLink ads to appear on</span>
ContentLink Ad Formats

My Thoughts
Kontera is very easy to set up, all you have to do is place their code on all pages of your site and you are ready to go. The bad side is that Kontera shows earnings one day later. I also noticed that their code increases page load time. Though ContentLink Ads may not be relevant on the first few days, it will get more relevant as days go by.
If you wish to make money online with your web site, try out Kontera.
Have you tried out Kontera? Did it affect your Adsense CTR?

I just had to mention “Joel Comm sent me” in the application to be admitted despite having less than 500K views a month.
Kontera is certainly very easy to use/implement.

John , does Kontera affects the CTR of adsense ?
Vikram
April 17, 2007 at 10:18 pm
@ Madhur Kapoor: I guess Kontera does not affects the CTR of Adsense, but IntelliTxt affects the CTR of Adsense. IntelliTxt and Google Adsense can not be put together.

John, just curious as to what kind of CTR you get with Kontera? Not looking for exact figures or anything, just a rough estimate.

I dont think Kontera has a requirement for traffic. It is intelliTXT that has that requirement.

I find the pop up links very annoying myself. I probably might never put Kontera on my blog.

Ashish Mohta- I am not sure how to filter out advertisers or how to make the double underline link to normal links. Try contacting the Kontera team.
Madhur Kapoor- So far Kontera has not affected my AdSense CTR
Vikram- IntelliTXT and Google Adsense can be used together
Vince Cordic- I get around 3% CTR
Anand- IntelliTXT is strict in which publishers they accept.

This is a really informative one, as Kontera seems to be a neat way to make money for small blogs as well.
@Ashish - it will be great if you can update (here or in your blog) about your findings).
Thanks,
Gili

@Ashish: I dont think kontera will allow you to change the double underline. That is the only way to indicate it is an ad.
@Abdul: I find Snapshots annoying as well.. So this is under the same category

I also have Kontera in my blog. Some few thoughts:
- It didn’t affect my CTR
- I’m earning a fraction (maybe 5-10%) of what I earn from my biggest revenue source - AdSense
- None of my readers/visitors have complained about it.
Personally I also don’t like such ads.. if it’s big like that Snap preview thing.
3% with Kontera is great. I’ll implement some of the tips that you’ve suggested and see what happens.

How have you ads been performing since you added them John? CPM? Has it had any impact on your adsense CPM?
Ashish Mohta
April 18, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Kontera doesn’t affect the Adsense CTR only if your adsense positioning is right. Since I display just adsense unit none of them got affected.
My ctr is around 3% but clicks are less. I think we need a good traffic for getting money from kontera like program.
@Gili: Kontera is good but since my traffic is low i might not make so much money. Update is my traffic has doubled so i am excited now to see how it works. If i find something good maybe I will make a post and link back here.
@Vijay: I am not sure but i have seen places where there is no double lines. Moreover if its single link chances are more people will click it but then it will be annoying as they will landup somewhere else.
@Madhur: I think you haven’t applied kontera filers and tags. My ctr was like 0.8 before that but now its 3.

can i know where to place it?
JohnTP
April 22, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Everton- My Adsense Ads are actually doing well these days after the new Adsense look and also my traffic has increased.
kakashi- If you are using a WordPress blog, place <div class=KonaBody> where your content starts and </div> where your content ends.
This way you can limit Kontera ads to just your content and prevent it from appearing on places like your comment section, sidebars, etc

I have not seen a drop in clicks through adsense since implementing kontera, and actually it has been a decent revenue maker for me personally. What bothers me though are the tons of landing pages that I find.
Also, kontera does not pay as well as adsense.

@Cypherhakz: They accepted easily at the initial stage. I dont think the criteria is really a criteria. When i got accepted i had half of the traffic what i have now. But your earnings will be good only if you have good page views.

If Kontera strictly adhere to their traffic qualification, there would be so few that would qualify.
So why still keep that criteria on, when they know its not realistic at all? *Shrugs*

I am having a mixed feeling about Kontera as soon as i started running Kontera, Adsense started doing smart pricing but i do not know if it is related.

Just a word of caution to would-be Kontera publishers.
If you think AdSense CPM is low, you haven’t seen anything yet. Kontera offers the worst CPM I have ever seen. Mine is currently at 0.65 (Yes you read that correctly)
My Kontera CTR is about the same as AdSense, but my AdSense earnings outstrip Kontera by a factor of 6!
My advice would be to try Kontera for about 2 months and if it doesn’t deliver good earnings then dump it!
It simply isn’t worth having on your site if you get a crappy CPM!

How many $ do you guys get per click with Kontera? I’m confused as I only get 14 cents for 3 clicks??
I remember I got 2 cent for a click a few months back, so I dumped Kontera. I was trying it again a few days ago but the rate hasn’t improved
Probably will ditch Kontera and back to Adsense…

Contera links are very irritating for the users. So in my opinion, it is not a good option for making money online.
