How to show the Most Popular posts in your Feed

Last time I had showed you how to add Related Posts to your Feed. Now, I will help you show the Most Popular posts of your blog in your Feed too.

Note: This hack is for WordPress users only.

The main advantages of this hack is that it increases your blog’s pageviews and gets your RSS subscribers to visit your blog instead of just reading your latest posts from your feed.

Instructions

  • Download and activate the Popularity Contest WordPress Plugin
  • Download the wp-rss2.php from here
  • Unzip the downloaded file
  • Upload and replace your wp-rss2.php

Now within sometime you shall get both Most Popular Posts and Related Posts displayed on your Feed!

Note: You should deactivate Feedburner Summary Burner (if you have it activated) for this to work.

Switched to Full Feeds

On about May 27, 2006 I had switched to Partial Feeds as I experienced Content Theft.

Now I have switched back to Full Feeds again as many readers requested for it. Also, I am experimenting to see how this will affect my traffic, earnings and comments.

I will also use this time to experiment RSS Advertising, something I have not tried yet as I was on Partial Feeds.

I had activated Text Link Ad’s Feedvertising a few days back and is waiting for Advertisers to buy links on my site and feed.

If you are interested in advertising on my feed, click here.

Advertise on my RSS feed!

I had switched back to Full Feeds a few days back and I already noticed that the number of comments have decreased :(

Another thing I noticed is an increase in RSS Subcribers.

So what are you waiting for, Subscribe to my feeds :)

What is the meaning of the term ‘ProBlogger’?

I have been asking myself this question for some time now. I did a quick search on Google for “define: problogger” but it showed no results.

Then I started asking many bloggers including LiewCF for the meaning. From them I understood that the term ‘ProBlogger’ has got no fixed meaning.

For different bloggers it has different meanings. For some, the term means ‘Full-Time Blogger’ and for some it means ‘Professional Blogger’.

Finally I asked Darren Rowse, the ProBlogger, from problogger.net. This was his reply -

to me it means I do it professionally - i.e I do it as a job - its my profession

I guess it’s like a lot of words - multiple meanings to different ppl

So from now onwards ‘ProBlogger’ means Professional Blogger to me :)

What does the term ‘ProBlogger’ mean to you?

New AdSense Ad Format

Today when I logged into my AdSense account, I found this message saying that an additional format for your text, image, and video ad units has been added.

Google AdSense Ad Format

but when I clicked ‘Learn more’ it showed an error page that says

We’re sorry, but the information you’ve requested cannot be found. Please try searching or browsing the AdSense Help Center for answers to your AdSense questions.

I checked the available Ad Formats but could not find any new ones.

Has anyone seen the new AdSense Ad Format?

Update: Darren just let me know that Google has added a new 200×200 Ad Unit.

Google AdSense has just added a brand new 200×200 “Small Square” ad unit size to their regular ad unit line up. So new, in fact, that AdSense hasn’t announced it yet, and it hasn’t yet made it into their ad format page yet.

How to Reduce Ad Blindness

When you display an Ad in the same location with the same colors and Ad format, regular visitors tend to ignore them. This is called Ad Blindness.

A few days back I had mentioned about a WordPress Plugin called Adsense Injection that helps you to reduce Ad Blindness on your blog. Here is another tip to reduce AdSense Ad Blindness.

The tip here is to rotate between four different color palettes for your AdSense Ads.

AdBlindness

  1. Log in to your account at https://www.google.com/adsense
  2. Click the AdSense Setup tab and choose AdSense for content as the product
  3. Choose an Ad type and format.
  4. In the Colors drop-down box, click ‘Use multiple palettes’, then select up to 4 color palettes by holding down the Control or Command key
  5. Copy-and-paste the AdSense Ad code into web pages

As 4 different color schemes are used randomly on your page, there is a good chance that your visitors will click the Ad thereby increasing your click through rate (CTR) and allowing you earn more with AdSense.

Are you Advertising your lack of Readers?

Many bloggers use FeedBurner’s FeedCounter service to display their number of RSS Readers. While this is a good idea, it can be bad for bloggers with a feed count of say below 50. I have seen many bloggers use FeedCounter on the first day of starting their blog. I took a screenshot from a blog so that I can prove my point.

Subscribe

This is not a good strategy for keeping your readers. Do you think anyone would like to read a blog that no one else is reading?

Most of your first time visitors will never subscribe if they see a low number of RSS readers on your FeedCounter. So I suggest that you don’t place a FeedCounter on your blog until you have a feedcount of at least 50.

The same goes for TopBlogSites, Alexa Rank, Traffic statistics or anything that shows a count.

Once you start getting good traffic, you can place all these counters to bring in even more readers.
