Popularity Contest 1.2

Popularity Contest, a plugin for WordPress that will help you see which of your posts are most popular, was updated yesterday to version 1.2. The significant changes include:

  1. Support for recording page activity
  2. Added a [?] link (optional) to explain the ‘Popularity: 27%’ that is displayed
  3. Added a hook for other plugins to conditionally change when the popularity % is displayed
  4. Use defined variables for options so that they can be defined in other plugins - easier upgrading and no editing required.

Firefox 2 Feature: Recently Closed Tabs

Yesterday I had complained here that Firefox 2 lacks one of my favorite features in Opera- Recently Closed Tabs.

Today, thanks to Forever Geek, I found that Firefox 2 already had that feature!

You can access the recently closed tabs list under the History menu. It gives you the option to re-open tabs you’ve closed while in a particular session. You can also open all recently closed tabs in a new tabbed window. When you close the browser, the list is cleared.

Had you seen this feature in Firefox 2 earlier?

Firefox Extension: Fastererfox

FastererfoxMost of you have heard and tried the popular Firefox Extension - Fasterfox, but have you tried the even better Fastererfox?

Fastererfox is a tweaked version of Fasterfox that allows you to improve your surfing speeds even faster (especially to regularly visited sites) with some new features, contained in a new Tab called “Thrash” which you can find in the options settings.

The 3 new features given by Fastererfox are

  1. The ability to force pages to be prefetched, ignoring webmasters attempts to stop Fastererfox
  2. A choice of dynamically created pages to cache (ASP, ASP .NET, JSP, STM). Quite often many dynamically written pages are fairly static and can be cached
  3. The maximum number of links to preload on current page. This is set to a maximum of 100 by default and can be set to a higher value

Fasterfox is now compatible with Firefox 2.0

FasterFoxI just read on Shivaranjan’s blog that the Firefox extension, Fasterfox, is now compatible with Firefox 2.0.

Firefox fans who must have upgraded to the latest Firefox 2.0 would have been disappointed over the incompatibility of Fasterfox extension. The developer of Fastefox extension has updated it to be compatible with Firefox 2.0.

Earlier I had used MR Tech’s Local Install extension to make Fasterfox compatible with Firefox 2.0, but now an update can fix the problem :)

For those of you who have not tried Fasterfox yet,

Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.

Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with the unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing.

Make old Extensions compatible in Firefox 2

After installing Firefox 2 today, I found that some of my favorite extensions like ImgLikeOpera, Fasterfox and SessionSaver were not compatible with Firefox 2.0.

After searching for a while I found the solution for it from Liew’s Blog- MR Tech’s Local Install extension.

The primary function of MR Tech’s Local Install extension is to provide the tools needed to install and manage extensions and themes locally. It has the function to make old extensions compatible with new Firefox.

After installing the extension, right-click on any incompatible extension and select “Make Compatible” and restart Firefox. That’s it!

I am back

I am back…after being offline for more than 1 Week. And I am glad I am finally online. What happened?

It all started after my UPS battery became weak and I needed to replace it. Two days after I gave my UPS for repair I came to know that my UPS battery was an imported one and was not available at my place. The next day I bought a new UPS and found that my PC refused to start. Only today I found that the problem was caused due to overheating. So I cleaned my CPU fan and everything went well.

But my PC problems were not the only reasons that kept me offline for more than a week. I had high fever too :(

Tips that helped me increase my Google AdSense CTR

These days even though my traffic has increased my AdSense Click Through Rate (CTR) remains low. I tried many things to increase my CTR like putting images next to my Ads, implementing Section targetting, blended Ads, placing Ads near content, choosing best Ad format, etc but I did not succeed in increasing my CTR much.

A few days back, while chatting with LiewCF, I asked him for some suggestions to increase my CTR. He quickly gave me some tips which I had not thought of before. I tried some of them and I already noticed my CTR improve. What were those tips?

Below I have listed the tips that Liew suggested to me along with my comments. But please do note that these tips are meant for my site. They may or may not work for you.

Internet Explorer 7 Final Released

Internet Explorer 7Microsoft has released the final build of Internet Explorer 7 and you can expect them to push the build by automatic updates on 1st November.

I am currently downloading the 14.8 MB IE setup for Windows XP SP2.

I wonder if we will have to redesign our themes to display well on IE7 final. What do you think?

Update: I just installed IE7, and the first thing I noticed was that transparent png images on my theme display well on IE now. But my header looks ugly in it and my theme produces a script error when viewed in IE7. It’s time to redesign my theme.

About IE7 as a browser, I liked it…much better than IE6! But I still won’t be using it as my primary browser :D

I am still waiting for Firefox 2 final :(
