Blogg-Buzz: A Digg Like Site For Bloggers

Blogg-Buzz logoThose of you who use Digg might have noticed that it is harder for Blogs to get to the Digg frontpage (except for popular blogs like Problogger.net and TechCrunch) and bloggers also may get flamed by Diggers for submitting their own blogs. What’s worser is that Digg even started banning blogs like JohnChow.com and PaulStamatiou.com.

So for the past one month, Shivaranjan and I have been working on Blogg-Buzz which is a Digg like site for Bloggers to submit interesting blog posts and videos. When Shivaranjan was busy with his office work, I had help from other bloggers like Carol, Ashish and Sreedhar.

WordPress 2.0.6 released

WordPress 2.0.6 was released a few hours ago. This new version includes an important security fix and it’s recommended that everyone upgrade.

Here’s what’s new:

  • The aforementioned security fixes.
  • HTML quicktags now work in Safari browsers.
  • Comments are filtered to prevent them from messing up your blog layout.
  • Compatibility with PHP/FastCGI setups.

For developers, there’s a new anti-XSS function called attribute_escape(), and a new filter called “query” which allows you filter any SQL at runtime. WordPress 2.0.6 will be probably the last release before WordPress 2.1 comes out.

Chitika eMiniMalls

I applied for Chitika 3 days back and got approved yesterday. As I was new to it, I did not have much idea on how to optimize it for better CTR. Thankfully Darren has shared good Chitika eMiniMalls Tips on Problogger.net

That post alone taught me many useful things that I needed to know about Chitika such as how to use the post title as the keyword, how to disable the search tab and how to make the ‘Best Deals’ as the default tab. The post also gives tips on positioning your Chitika eMiniMalls. Thank you Darren for the useful post!

Exploit discovered in WordPress Template.php

A Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been discovered in wp-admin/templates.php in WordPress which allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the file parameter.

Attacker-supplied HTML and script code would execute in the context of the affected site, potentially allowing the attacker to steal cookie-based authentication credentials or to control how the site is rendered to the user; other attacks are also possible.

All versions of WordPress are affected. WordPress has fixed this for v2.0.6 and released a patch for v2.0.5. To patch, simply overwrite the original file after taking backup.

Blend Your AdSense Ad

It’s a known fact among many AdSense publishers that blending AdSense Ads increases CTR (Click Through Rate). Here is a good example of a blended Half Banner (234×60) AdSense Ad that I found on FreewareFiles.com.

5 Questions Interview for Bloggers

Carol has started a new game called “The 5 Questions Interview” for Bloggers and she tagged me. WordPress Plugin: PHP Exec

Have you ever wanted to execute PHP codes inside a post? If yes, you need to install PHP Exec which is a plugin for WordPress that lets you execute dynamic PHP code in posts.

It masks PHP code before balanceTags, and unmask them afterwards, so it should be safe to use PHP code that has literal HTML tags in it, for example: code which print out HTML.

Installation is pretty simple. Download the plugin, put it into your wp-content/plugins directory and activate it. And when you need to execute PHP codes, enclose the code with <phpcode> … </phpcode>

5 Things You Did Not Know About JohnTP

These days I have been noticing an increasing number of bloggers playing the Blog Tagging game. And yesterday Sreejith tagged me to share 5 things that people don’t know about me. So here goes…

  1. I like Astronomy: I was interested on Astronomy even during my childhood days. Nowadays I visit Stumble Video to watch interesting videos on it.
  2. I love Gaming: Whenever I am bored, I spend time playing games on my PC and Playstation. Some of my favorite games are GTA San Andreas, Need for Speed Most Wanted, The Sims and The Age of Empires. I wish to buy Xbox 360 soon :)
  3. I like watching WWE: I am a WWE fan, but my interest on it has decreased these days.
  4. Stamp Collection: When I was a kid, I had a hobby of collecting stamps and coins (most of which I don’t have at present).
  5. I love comments (I guess my regular readers already know this) :D

I am tagging Listikal, Christer Edwards, Enblogopedia, Connected Internet and Sourcer.
