WordPress 2.1.1 is Dangerous, Upgrade Now!

If you upgraded to WordPress 2.1.1 in the past 3-4 days, download the new version (2.1.2) and update your blog again because your files may include a security exploit that was added by a cracker!

Only WordPress 2.1.1 seems to have been affected, so if you have not upgraded to WordPress 2.1.1 you should be fine. If your blog is running 2.1.1, please upgrade immediately and do a full overwrite of your old files.

Text Link Ads Review

Text Link AdsText Link Ads (TLA) are the text links that you can find on my sidebar under ‘Sponsored Links’, that link to the Advertiser’s site.

Advertisers will find Text Link Ads useful as these are static links without a nofollow and will therefore help them improve their search engine rankings and get them some traffic.

Text Link Ads makes it easy for Advertisers to choose which sites to advertise on by displaying all their publishers by category and ordering them by Alexa ranking and monthly price. Once you select the sites you want to advertise on, just tick the ‘Buy’ checkbox and click ‘Add to cart’.

As a new Advertiser on Text Link Ads you are eligible for $100 in FREE Links.

Publishers will find Text Link Ads useful as unlike other Ads they are just text links and won’t be irritating for their visitors. As a publisher you can choose how many ads you would like to display, and whether they will appear on a single page or sitewide. Be careful on what you choose because this will affect on how much each link on your site will cost. The more Ads you choose to appear, the lesser will be the price per link.

You can choose where to place the links on your site, but remember that certain places can get you more money. You can use the Text Link Ads calculator to see how much a link is worth on your site depending on where you put it and whether you chose to offer a single page or a site wide link. The left side of your page can earn you the most and the link worth decreases as you move to the right side.

WordPress Plugin: MyAvatars

MyAvatars is a plugin for WordPress that displays the readers MyBlogLog avatars besides their comments. In my opinion MyAvatars is much better than Gravatars as I think most of my commenters use MyBlogLog rather than Gravatars.

To test this, I activated Gravatars for some time on this blog and found that very few commenters were using Gravatars. When I activated MyAvatars, I was happy to see most of my readers faces :)

MyAvatars is easy to install, just download the file myavatars.zip, extract and copy it in your plugin directory preserving the folder name and then activate the plugin.

You will then have to edit your comments.php file and add the following code inside the comment’s loop

<?php if(function_exists("MyAvatars")) MyAvatars(); ?>

The disadvantage of using this plugin is that it can increase your page loading time by loading all those MyBlogLog Avatars :(

WordPress Plugin: Permalinks Migration

Permalinks Migration is a plugin for WordPress that allows you to safely change your permalink structure without breaking the old links to your website and even without affecting your search engine rankings.

It does this by generating a “301 Redirect” or a Permanent Redirect when a user or spider visits your site through old permalinks and redirects them to the new permalinks of the same post.

I found this plugin via Everton’s blog who recently changed his permalinks using the Permalinks Migration plugin from something like this

www.connectedinternet.co.uk/2005/12/05/652/

to a better Permalink Structure like this

http://www.connectedinternet.co.uk/2005/12/05/post-title/

A good permalinks structure will help you improve your search engine rankings, so if you currently use a bad permalink structure like

http://www.example.com/?p=57

you can safely change your permalink structure to a better one using Permalinks Migration without fear of losing your traffic and pagerank :)

Poll: Do You Consider Related Posts In RSS Feeds As Clutter?

I have put up a poll to my earlier question - “Do you consider Related Posts in RSS Feeds as clutter?“. After reading the comments on that post it looks as if most people do not consider Related Posts in RSS Feeds as clutter but still just to get a better picture I put up a poll (on sidebar).

I have closed the comments on this post, you can comment here.

Note: This Poll will automatically close on March 7th. Vote now!

Do You Consider Related Posts In RSS Feeds As Clutter?

I have always thought that adding Related Posts in RSS Feeds would be useful for both the blogger as well as for the reader and that everyone thought the same way. But after reading this post on Problogger.net, I found out that Darren considers Related Posts in RSS Feeds as clutter and so do Daniel Scocco of Daily Blog Tips as he comments on Problogger’s latest Speedlinking post:

JohnTP, I am not sure about adding related posts to the feed.

Darren discussed that some time ago. Most RSS readers are loyal readers, and it is very likely that they have already read all the posts on the Related Entries. Plus, if you combine related entries, feed flare, and footer copyright message your feed gonna get cluttered.

I have subscribed to many blogs and I have not yet finished reading all their older posts, so I would find it useful if they included Related Posts in their RSS Feeds so that I could easily find their older and related posts while reading the latest posts on their feed.

Adding Related Posts in RSS Feeds benefits both the blogger and the Reader - the blogger gets to increase pageviews by getting their RSS readers to visit their older posts and the Reader gets to read the older posts that they had not read before. So as a reader, I would be happy if all the blogs I read had Related Posts in their RSS Feeds.

Do you consider Related Posts in RSS Feeds as clutter?

Will Using MyBlogLog get you banned from Adsense?

I first read it over at 901am and then at ShoeMoney that MyBlogLog tracks our visitors Ad clicks

Are you using Adsense and MyBlogLog together? Remember the rule about not being able to disclose the CTR rates to third parties? MyBlogLog is gathering this exact data on your site if you’re using the service. Using Adsense with MyBlogLog could get you banned from Adsense!

Just to be on the safe side I have removed MyBlogLog from this blog. What is your opinion on this?
