How to create a Favicon

A Favicon is a little custom icon that appears next to a website’s URL in the address bar of a web browser that is 16×16 pixels in size.

Favicon

In order to make your own icon, you need a special program that can save images with the .ico extension. Until recently I used to use a freeware called IconArt to create favicons.

What is IconArt?

IconArt is an icon editing tool that allows you to create new icons from scratch. The editor provides all the tools you need like pen, spray, fill and selections. You can also move, rotate and flip the icon, apply masks, change colors and more.

How to share music with your friends in Yahoo Messenger

Most of you might be already knowing how to do this but whenever I ask my friends to share music they think I am asking them to send the music file to me. Well, this is how you do it in Yahoo Messenger 8-

While chatting with a friend, go to ‘Actions> Call Computer’ and after they accept the call, you can begin sharing music by going to ‘Actions>Share Music File’ and browse for your favorite MP3 file.

Yahoo! Messenger also offers some default audibles like glass breaking, clapping, screaming, etc. Enjoy!

How to load Images from Cache in Firefox

Users like me who have a Bandwidth Restriction need to find some way to save bandwidth. Until recently I used to do this by blocking Images and Flash on Firefox. And used to check for updates on blogs through feeds. But I was tired of browsing the Web imageless, so I had to find another way.

Now thanks to a Firefox extension called ImgLikeOpera, I can now load only the cached images in my Firefox browser. This helps me to save Bandwidth as well as see some of the images. This extension is also very useful for non broadband users to increase page load time of sites by loading only cached images.

Some of the features of ImgLikeOpera are

  • placeholders for blocked images
  • (re)load image from context menu or Ctrl+rightMouseClick
  • forced expiration time (5 minutes - 3 months)
  • policies for tabs
  • filters

You can set one of these policies for each tab:

  • don’t load images
  • load cached images only
  • load images for the originating Web site only
  • load all images

ImgLikeOpera also allows you to block images with filters. This is one of the features that was missing in Firefox and available in Opera. Now Firefox fans too can enjoy it :-)

How to reduce memory usage of Yahoo Messenger

With every new version, Yahoo! Messenger seems to be using more and more memory than the previous versions. With the addition of the Plugin feature in the latest version, things have got even more bulky.

Currently, Yahoo! Messenger uses about 41,164K memory on my system. Based on your usage of the messenger, the memory usage increases and decreases.

Here are some very simple tips to decrease memory usage of Yahoo Messenger:

  1. Uninstall Plugins: The amount of memory Plugins use depend on the number of plugins you install. To uninstall plugins from the Plug-ins Manager, go to ‘Actions>Choose a plugin…’ and click the ‘My Plug-ins’ tab. Decide which Plugins you don’t need and then click ‘Stop’ and the icon near to it to uninstall
  2. Remove Ads: You can save some memory and bandwidth by removing Yahoo! Messenger’s Ads. You can find how to do it here
  3. Switch to Classic Skin: If you prefer performance to appearance, you may switch to the classic skin of Yahoo! Messenger. You can do this by going to ‘Messenger>Change Skin…’ and select Classic from there.

This is all I could think of right now. I will let you know if I find any other methods to reduce memory usage of Yahoo Messenger. Do you know any other methods?

How to increase your site’s Link Popularity

Link Popularity is the number of incoming links you have linking to your site. It is important because the more links you get the more traffic and exposure you get for your site.

Link Popularity used to play an important role in getting you a higher PageRank. Although now I feel Google does not give much importance to backlinks. They seem to award every new site with a PR 5 nowadays. So what is Google looking for? Well, I am not sure but Orginal content is still an important factor.

Your site’s Link Popularity also plays an important part in how search engines rank your website for various keyword searches. That explains why I am still on the first page for keyword ‘utorrent‘. The article has got a number of links to it and is the main reason why it is still on the first page for that and it’s related keywords.

A link from any site is good. But it is best if you get quality links from related sites. As a result, increasing the number of quality, relevant sites which link to your site can actually improve your search engine rankings.
