Internet Explorer 7 Final Released

Internet Explorer 7Microsoft has released the final build of Internet Explorer 7 and you can expect them to push the build by automatic updates on 1st November.

I am currently downloading the 14.8 MB IE setup for Windows XP SP2.

I wonder if we will have to redesign our themes to display well on IE7 final. What do you think?

Update: I just installed IE7, and the first thing I noticed was that transparent png images on my theme display well on IE now. But my header looks ugly in it and my theme produces a script error when viewed in IE7. It’s time to redesign my theme.

About IE7 as a browser, I liked it…much better than IE6! But I still won’t be using it as my primary browser :D

I am still waiting for Firefox 2 final :(

Flofox Revisited: Flock Theme for Firefox

Flock is a nice browser with a lot of good functionalities but it is still in beta with lot’s of bugs to fix. But Flock’s default theme rocks and that’s one of the reasons I used it for some time as my primary browser.

What’s wrong with Alexa Traffic Ranking?

A few members complained on TechnoBytez Forum recently that their Alexa Traffic Ranking has been the same for about a month now.

Today I found that my ranking had improved from 73,409 to 57,708 :)

But for some reason Firefox and IE does not display the new rankings for me even after clearing the Cache several times. The new ranking is shown only in Opera :(

Google to Yahoo Sitemap Converter

Most of you may know about the Google Sitemap Generator plugin for WordPress that automatically generates a new Google Sitemap whenever you post to your blog. This can help you to increase the number of indexed pages in Google.

But what about Yahoo? This is where Elliot’s script comes handy. His script will help you convert your Google Sitemap into a Yahoo compliant sitemap that you can submit to Yahoo.

You can find the installation instructions here. Basically there are two files- g2y.php and yahoo.txt that you have to upload to your server into the same directory where your Google Sitemap is located.

Then CHMOD the yahoo.txt file to 777 and run g2y.php from your browser to get all the URL’s in your Google Sitemap to be listed in the yahoo.txt file.

Now just submit your yahoo.txt file to Yahoo Submit.

Note: Yahoo requires that the text file be named urllist.txt, so it is a good idea to rename your yahoo.txt file to urllist.txt. But do make sure that you correctly change the reference to the file in g2y.php.

My Top 10 Favorite Firefox Extensions

Firefox is my favorite Browser and one of the things I like about it is the support for extensions. Here I have listed out my Top 10 favorite Firefox Extensions.

  1. DownThemAllFirefox has an inbuilt download manager, but you have probably noticed that it sometimes hangs when you try to resume a download. DownThemAll is the solution- it can even resume downloads from previous Firefox Sessions.

    Download DownThemAll

  2. Session SaverAs you know, closing Firefox closes all the tabs. They do not re-open the next time you start Firefox. Session Saver restores the browser to exactly where you last left it.

The settings can be altered from Tools>SessionSaver>Settings. Chose Expert mode for better details, and put a checkmark next to ‘Every startup from’,’Existing windows’,’And tabs’,’When restoring, join multiple windows into one’,’Save a session-backup on shutdown’, and ‘Allow me to “re-open” closed tabs’.

    Download Session Saver

OpenDNS: Browse the Web faster

I decided to try OpenDNS after reading about it on both liewcf.com and paulstamatiou.com. And the result? Better speeds and improved security.

For those of you wondering what OpenDNS is, it is a free DNS service that makes your Internet experience safer, faster and smarter for you and everyone using your network.

OpenDNS has the following advantages

  • it is safer: OpenDNS can identify and stop Phishing sites from trying to steal your personal information
  • it is faster: OpenDNS server is faster because it has big cache and good network
  • it is smarter: OpenDNS makes corrections for common spelling mistakes automatically, that means www.google.cm will be corrected to www.google.com and wordpress.og to wordpress.org.

OpenDNS service is free and makes money by serving advertisements on search results pages when you make unknown typos.

To start using OpenDNS you don’t need any software. Just head to it’s start page where you will be asked to select either your network device or operating system so that they can help you start the service.

One thing that troubles me is that OpenDNS does not work well with Onspeed for me :-(

Happy Birthday WWW !

15 years ago, on 6th August 1991, Sir Tim Berners-Lee posted a message on Usenet about a project called WorldWideWeb… “On that day the web went world wide” writes Amit Agarwal.

Now the WWW is 15 years old. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY WORLD WIDE WEB !

I have no idea what I would have done without the Internet. Today it is like a part of my body. I can’t live without it :-)

FeedBurner testing Blog Networks

I just came to know from TechCrunch that FeedBurner is beta testing a new product called “Networks” which are groups of blogs on a single topic that are using Feedburner to manage their RSS feed. The product is currently planned for a September launch.

The goal is to create high quality collections of similar types of publishers so as to allow people to subscribe to a single feed containing all of the content from all of the blogs in that category.

These are some of the benefits to Subscribers and Publishers as listed by Brad Feld.

Benefits to Subscribers

  • It’s easy to find high quality relevant bloggers / feeds for a specific topic through the aggregation into a Network.
  • There will be a “micro-portal” for each Network – you’ll be able to go to a landing page that lists all the members of the network, selectively subscribe to their feeds, or explore their blogs.
  • You’ll be able to subscribe to the spliced Network feed

Benefits to Publishers

  • The “micro-portal” will be another place for subscribers to find your blog / feed.
  • You will get new readers as a result of people that subscribe to the spliced feed
  • Advertisers will be able buy ads in the Network with higher quality advertising that is relevant to the readers of feeds in the Network.
  • You’ll have Network oriented publicity tools which will help cross-promote feeds in the network.
  • You might make some new friends via your fellow Network members.
