JohnTP.com was hosted on my friend Deep’s DreamHost account and it was blocked as my blog took a lot of resources.

Deep’s account hosted many other sites too and all were down because of this and another blog. I was on a visit to my Grandparents house at the time and never knew that my site was down until I visited it on my uncle’s PC. But I thought it was a temporary thing.

Later while traveling back home, Deep called to let me know about the mess created by DreamHost and that he has been contacting them for a long time with no luck.

After many hours, Dreamhost replied back and unblocked all sites except for this blog. I then created my own DreamHost account so that I can use VPS. Many more hours later of contacting DreamHost they moved my domain to the new account, but forgot to move the files and database!

I contacted them many times, but they never replied back. Luckily Deep came to the rescue and moved the files and database for me today. None of my sites have ever been down for this long and thanks to DreamHost I lost a lot of traffic and money

I am now waiting for them to move the files and database of my hardware review blog to my new DreamHost account. I won’t say DreamHost sucks but their support really sucks!

Have you faced any problems with DreamHost?

Today I noticed some readers commenting with names like ‘Online Technology’, ‘Latest Technology’ and ‘Web 2.0′. This can be helpful to you as you get the link to your site in my Top Commentator list with that anchor text, which can help you rank well in Search Engines for that anchor text.

I think people are also more likely to click links with anchor text ‘Online Technology’ rather than any persons name. So you should try it too while commenting on blogs where you aim to get on their Top Commentator list.

Make sure you select an anchor text that describes your sites content and for which many people search for. The best way to find out what anchor text to choose is by using a keyword tool like Overture.

But please don’t try to get two spots on the Top Commentator list. I noticed two commenters today that had two links each for their site on the Top Commentator list, one with the anchor text they chose and the other one with their name.

I filtered out their names (the special anchor text they chose was not removed) so that other commenters too get chance to come on the list. I don’t think I should allow the same person to have two spots on the list.

What do you think?

After finding out why guest bloggers are great for a blog, I decided to invite a few bloggers to write for JohnTP.com. I would like to introduce my first guest blogger – Ashish Mohta.

Ashish is a 26 year old guy whose full-time job is as a program analyst and web development for a software company. In his Tech blog Technospot.net, he writes about Tech analysis, Security, Software , Web 2.0 and Web 3.0. He is more into explaining Tech instead of just writing about it.

I hope you will all welcome him and enjoy reading his posts

This is his message to all readers of JohnTP.com

Hi to everybody who has been reading JohnTP.com (an awesome blog, you can’t deny it can ya? ). It’s great to be invited here by JohnTP (thanks John), but before I start with my series of posts, I thought to converse here so we can get to know each other better.

As per me, I have been writing about technology with just one goal “To make you understand what technology is”. Why this is my goal ? Just one reason…for example we use our phone but we never think how it works ? We have Interactive TV at home but we don’t know how we can work with it in a lot better way…because we miss a little understanding of it. Don’t worry I am not going to write about any hardware or programming concept, rather I explain things with examples which will be a piece of cake for you.

From you I would just expect one thing – a lot of queries and questions. I would be glad to help you out on anything which might not be clear to you or if you think I am wrong somewhere you are most welcome to correct me. I am open to criticism and getting corrected. Suggest as you feel and we can have a very good deal knowing things a lot better.

When I first installed Windows Vista, I was confused when I did not find the features I used to frequently use in Windows XP – standby and hibernate. A quick look in the Windows Help and Support gave me the following answer:

In earlier versions of Windows, standby saves your work to memory and puts your PC into a power-saving state. Hibernate also puts your PC into a power-saving state but saves your work to your hard disk so that you can safely turn off your PC.

Windows Vista combines standby and hibernate into a single power-saving state called sleep.

Putting your PC to sleep offers the following advantages over shutting it down:

All of your work, including information about the programs that you were using, such as window location and size, is automatically saved to your hard disk.

When your PC wakes, Windows restores your previous work session within seconds. You don’t need to restart your PC, and then open the files that you were working on.

Sleep is typically the best power-saving state to leave your PC in when you are not using it. Shut down your PC only when you must turn off the power (for example, when you want to add memory or you don’t plan to use the computer for several days).

How to put your PC to sleep

To put your PC to sleep, click the Power button on the Start menu. To wake your PC, press the hardware power button.

That should clear your confusion on why standby and hibernate are missing in Windows Vista.

At the beginning of March, I had offered a FREE site wide link on this site for a month to anyone who signs up for Text Link Ads using my affiliate link.

I got a few people letting me know through comments and emails that they signed up using my TLA affiliate link, but so far TLA has not shown any of their names on my Referrals list.

I did a get a few referrals but all of them were advertisers who were referred by my Text Link Ads Review post (who probably found the post via Google).

So why did their names not show up? It could be probably because they did not install the advertising script on their site for seven days.

In order to qualify for an affiliate payment, a referred publisher must install the advertising script on their site for seven days. At this time the referral will appear in the affiliate’s account.

If an affiliate refers an advertiser who purchases an advertisement, the referral will appear in the affiliate account within 24 hours.

So those of you who signed up for Text Link Ads using my affiliate link, install the advertising script on your site for seven days if you are interested in getting a free site wide link on this site for a month.

One month is too less?

Sodhi commented on the other post that a one month link is too less and that this is not a good offer.

Well, a link on this PR 6 site costs $160 for a month currently and if you can get the link for free, its a big deal! All I get in return is $25. You can sign up using my TLA affiliate link if you are interested.

What if you have already signed up for Text Link Ads?

Sreejith had asked on the other post…

John, what if I already have an account ? Would this offer be there if I compel some other guy to sign up ?

Well, yes. If you have already signed up for TLA, you can try getting someone else to sign up using my affiliate link.

In that case, I will link you both for a month

What if you get more than one person to sign up?

In that case, I will link you 1 month per person. If you get 2 people to sign up using my affiliate link, I will link you for 2 months and the person you refer gets a 1 month link.

If you get 3 people to sign up using my affiliate link, I will link you for 3 months and so on.

If your site is new

If your site is too new to get accepted my Text Link Ads, you can wait till your site qualifies or get someone else to signup. This offer may run for a long time, so just contact me and I will let you know if the offer is still up.

After signing up

After signing up or getting other people to sign up, please contact me and let me know your name by which your signed up with TLA, or the name of your referred person. And don’t forget to install the advertising script on your site for seven days
