I doubt your feed readership jumped because of the ‘big’ RSS icon. It’s probably jumped because the latest version of browsers makes it easier to subscribe to feeds, plus more users are appreciating the benefits of RSS.

What would make more sense is putting a ‘subscribe to my feed’ link at the end of posts. Most of your traffic probably comes from users coming from google who go direct to a particular article that matches what they were looking for. The best place to capture them is at the end of the article they’ve just read – the last thing they will be looking at is your header.

Also, make sure that RSD is working properly on your blog. Many people will use the built-in support in webbrowsers to subscribe to feeds.

We just released a set of widgets (buttons) that allows reader to monitor a blog (or comments for a post) via Instant Messenger, SMS or Email. Users get an alert with a short description and a link back to the full post on your site. Users can also filter headlines by keywords or phrases.

The intent is that mainstream readers dont have to know what RSS is or what a RSS reader is.
