Beware of this IM Virus

For the past few days I have been getting funny PMs from a few people on my Yahoo! Messenger Buddy List. These are some of the messages that I got.

Breaking news : school girls are kidnapped by the terrorists !! hxxp://mytermex.com/?news_id=18388

damn, she is so cute hxxp://nsl-school.org?id=miss_world

you are virus infected . Use this tool to remove viruses from your PC : hxxp://mytermex.com/?id=virus_shield

oh my god , i’ve won a 20000 usd lottery :O hxxp://nsl-school.org/?id=winning_list . Come to my house tonight for a party !!

Luckily I was aware about this virus as I had earlier read about it on Digital Point Forum.

After you get infected by the virus, it will try to kill your AntiVirus and will instantly send a PM to all your IM buddy friends. The virus does not affect Firefox and Opera, but IE users are going to have a tough time with it.

Have you come across this IM Virus? If yes, how did you get rid of it?

Ok! while i haven’t got the virus since i use FF, out of curiosity i would appreciate you telling me if you can, how soon do anti-virus programs update once a virus is detected? is it that easy to crack the code? mine, avast, sometimes updates twice a day, and seems to be doing its job so far.

My sister’s machine had got infected by this virus. My idiot cousin clicked on one of those links and Mcaffe could not kill that virus.

So, I removed mcafee, installed nod32 with latest updates, it detected the virus, deleted it and then ran ad-aware to delete thos registry keys which had disabled task manager and home page change option in IE.

I rarely use IE, the default browser on my computer is Opera 9.10 so I am always safe from these malicious attacks.

patrick ghose- My Norton AntiVirus updates automatically. I recommend you set your AntiVirus to update automatically too, so that you don’t have to worry about the updates :)

Deep- Is nod32 good? I want to install an AntiVirus that is less resource hungry.

The major anti virus sites (AntiVir,Norton,McAfee) do not have protection for this virus yet…

Try doing a search on the major virus sites for
    nsl-school virus

also it does not matter what browser you are using!!!

if you use Yahoo IM you are at risk..

Nod32 Antivirus is very less resource hungry and updates automatically and has got very fast scanning speeds when compared to other antivirus engines. I also heard kaspersky is also equally good but I never tried it.
