Personally, I used Psi with an MSN transport, but most people just won't move from MSN IM. If they would, I'd just create a Google Talk account and start chatting. Sigh. BTW, Psi does have emoticons. I believe Exodus (the Jabber IM I used before moving to Linux) does too. The point: don't waste your time on Google's limited client unless you have no technical knowledge whatsoever.
