How to create a Favicon

A Favicon is a little custom icon that appears next to a website’s URL in the address bar of a web browser that is 16×16 pixels in size.

Favicon

In order to make your own icon, you need a special program that can save images with the .ico extension. Until recently I used to use a freeware called IconArt to create favicons.

What is IconArt?

IconArt is an icon editing tool that allows you to create new icons from scratch. The editor provides all the tools you need like pen, spray, fill and selections. You can also move, rotate and flip the icon, apply masks, change colors and more.

Presenting TechnoBytez: A Forum for Bloggers

For the past few weeks a group of my friends and myself have been busy setting up a Forum to provide Bloggers a place to meet other Bloggers, review each other’s blogs and to discuss about Blogging, Making Money Online, Technology, Web Design and anything they wished to talk about.

We had first opened the forum as Invitation only and started giving out invites to some of the bloggers world wide. Now we have decided to open the Forum to all :)

All the bloggers who have registered so far has helped us a lot with the forum by giving us suggestions to improve the forum and helped us decide on which boards to put up. We thank all of them for their valuable suggestions and for the help and support they have given us.

We are going to come up with lot more stuff like tutorials, contests, games and more…

Checkout TechnoBytez and do let us know if you have any suggestions.

We have only started, so please be patient as there isn’t much content on the forum yet. But we do assure you that we will try our best to make this a better place.

If you have liked the forum and want to help us, please do by blogging about TechnoBytez on your blogs and by registering ofcourse :-)

WordPress Plugin: WP-Chunk

I have been having problems with long URL’s left by commentators that break my site design. So I did a quick Google search and found this cool WordPress Plugin that does the job perfectly.

WP-Chunk is a plugin for WordPress that automatically shortens URLs within comments so they don’t break your site design. This prevents most sites using fixed width from being broken when a long url is included in a comment.

For Example, it will turn long URL’s like

http://www.example.com/development/wordpress/wordpress-theme

to this

http://www.example.com/……..wordpress-theme

It’s a simple plugin that does the job well.

Installation

  1. Upload wp-chunk.php to your plugins directory
  2. Activate it

CSS Optimization

Blogging Pro has an interesting analysis on various CSS Optimization tools that are helpful in making your site load faster. The tools tested are CSS Optimizer, Icey’s CSS Compressor, Flumpcakes CSS Optimiser, and CleanCSS out of which the winner is Icey’s CSS Compressor.

I tried Icey’s CSS Compressor and got my CSS compressed by 45%. But when I tested it here, I found the layout completely broken.

So for me the winner is CSS Tweak, which works perfectly even though it compresses my CSS only by 30%.

Which CSS Optimizer works best for you?

Google to Yahoo Sitemap Converter

Most of you may know about the Google Sitemap Generator plugin for WordPress that automatically generates a new Google Sitemap whenever you post to your blog. This can help you to increase the number of indexed pages in Google.

But what about Yahoo? This is where Elliot’s script comes handy. His script will help you convert your Google Sitemap into a Yahoo compliant sitemap that you can submit to Yahoo.

You can find the installation instructions here. Basically there are two files- g2y.php and yahoo.txt that you have to upload to your server into the same directory where your Google Sitemap is located.

Then CHMOD the yahoo.txt file to 777 and run g2y.php from your browser to get all the URL’s in your Google Sitemap to be listed in the yahoo.txt file.

Now just submit your yahoo.txt file to Yahoo Submit.

Note: Yahoo requires that the text file be named urllist.txt, so it is a good idea to rename your yahoo.txt file to urllist.txt. But do make sure that you correctly change the reference to the file in g2y.php.

Yahoo! Easter Egg

Did you know that the new Yahoo! homepage has a hidden easter egg? Go to Yahoo! homepage and click on the “!” of the Yahoo logo on the top left after turning on your Speaker.

My Top 10 Favorite Firefox Extensions

Firefox is my favorite Browser and one of the things I like about it is the support for extensions. Here I have listed out my Top 10 favorite Firefox Extensions.

  1. DownThemAllFirefox has an inbuilt download manager, but you have probably noticed that it sometimes hangs when you try to resume a download. DownThemAll is the solution- it can even resume downloads from previous Firefox Sessions.

    Download DownThemAll

  2. Session SaverAs you know, closing Firefox closes all the tabs. They do not re-open the next time you start Firefox. Session Saver restores the browser to exactly where you last left it.

The settings can be altered from Tools>SessionSaver>Settings. Chose Expert mode for better details, and put a checkmark next to ‘Every startup from’,’Existing windows’,’And tabs’,’When restoring, join multiple windows into one’,’Save a session-backup on shutdown’, and ‘Allow me to “re-open” closed tabs’.

    Download Session Saver
